Coinbase Exempted from Most Securities Laws in Court Ruling
A federal court has ruled that Coinbase Global Inc. is considered a 'statutory seller' of securities in limited contexts, according to Bloomberg Law News.
The ruling was made by Judge Paul A. Engelmayer for the US District Court for the Southern District of New York on July 30, 2026.
Coinbase is only considered a statutory seller when it fills customers' token orders from its own inventory, not when matching buyers and sellers.
The matched transactions represent more than 99% of the trading volume at issue in the lawsuit.
