Coinbase Expands UK Trading with Zero-Commission Stocks
Coinbase has launched UK stock trading, allowing users to access nearly 4,000 American equities within their existing app. This move is part of Coinbase's 'Everything Exchange' strategy and coincides with the launch of licensed perpetual futures trading in Australia.
The new product offers zero-commission trades and extended 24/5 trading hours, a key differentiator against conventional UK brokerages that restrict trading to normal exchange sessions. Fractional share access is available during US market hours, but only whole-share trading is available outside these times.
US equities are custodied in the United States by Apex Clearing Corporation, a FINRA-member self-clearing broker-dealer, and are covered by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC). This means that stock positions held through the product are protected against brokerage failure up to $500,000, including $250,000 cash. However, the protection gap runs in the opposite direction for savings, with Coinbase UK's savings product carrying full FSCS deposit protection up to £85,000.
