Coinbase Exposes Coordinated Debanking Campaign Against Crypto Industry
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong claims that the company's legal battle against U.S. regulators has exposed a coordinated government campaign to restrict the crypto industry's access to banking services.
The alleged 'debanking' campaign, which targets crypto businesses without due process or public accountability, was revealed through documents obtained via Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and subsequent lawsuits against federal agencies, including the FDIC and SEC.
The FDIC sent letters to nearly two dozen banks in 2022 instructing them to pause or refrain from engaging in crypto-asset-related activities. The agency initially denied the existence of such an effort but was compelled to release additional records as part of a February settlement following Coinbase's FOIA lawsuit.
Armstrong argued that these directives amount to a behind-closed-doors debanking campaign that pressured banks without public debate or due process, adding that every American company and citizen deserves transparency from government agencies. The outcome reinforces Americans' right to know how government decisions affecting innovation and economic freedom are made.
