Coinbase Fires Back at WSJ Critique of Proposed Digital Asset Regulation Bill
Coinbase's Chief Policy Officer, Faryar Shirzad, has pushed back against a Wall Street Journal editorial criticizing the proposed CLARITY Act. The bill aims to provide a federal regulatory framework for digital assets in the United States.
The WSJ editorial argued that the act would allow stablecoin holders to earn rewards, potentially destabilizing the banking system by drawing deposits away. Shirzad countered that the bill imposes restrictions on such rewards, tying them directly to user activity and preventing speculative yield schemes.
Shirzad also addressed concerns about DeFi liability, clarifying that the act establishes a legal distinction between writing code (protected) and acting as a financial intermediary (regulated). Fraud, sanctions violations, and money laundering through DeFi platforms would still be prosecutable under the bill.
