Coinbase Global Surges in Market Share Despite Slumping Net Revenue
Coinbase Global's quarterly earnings report revealed mixed results for the cryptocurrency exchange operator. The company gained market share, increasing its share of global crypto trading volume to 10.3%, but its net revenue fell short of analyst expectations.
The company posted a net loss of nearly $360 million, or $1.36 per share, in contrast to a profit of over $1.4 billion in the same quarter last year. However, non-GAAP earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) were positive for the 14th consecutive quarter.
Coinbase's revenue remains heavily dependent on crypto trading, which was down at double-digit rates due to a sluggish market. The company earns commissions from trades, so reduced volume led to lower revenue. In an effort to diversify its income streams, Coinbase is focusing on subscription and services, such as its partnership with Circle Internet Group.
The partnership with Circle generates interest income for USD Coin balances stored on Coinbase's platforms. However, stablecoin revenue dipped 6% year-over-year to $292 million. The company also earns from subscriptions to its service, Coinbase One, which generated $114 million in the quarter, down 4% year-over-year.
