Coinbase Introduces Prediction Market for Gas Prices in Florida
Coinbase Financial Markets (CFM) has introduced a prediction market for users to bet on the future price of gas in Florida. The market, which is part of CFM's regulated derivatives entity, allows users to buy contracts with a payout of $1 if their prediction comes true.
The prediction market is set to expire on September 9, 2026, and has already seen some interest from traders, with a total volume of $236,002.26 in the past 24 hours. The current price reflects the market's odds, standing at around $0.00%.
Users can buy contracts for either 'Yes' or 'No', depending on their prediction of whether gas prices will rise or fall. If a user buys a contract and it expires with a payout, they will receive $1 minus what they paid (minus fees). For example, if a user buys 10 'Yes' contracts at $0.40 each, this costs them $4.00.
If the event happens and gas prices rise, each contract pays out $1.00, resulting in a payout of $10.00 for the user. However, their profit would be $10.00 - $4.00 = $6.00 (minus fees).
Trading is available 24/7 on Coinbase Financial Markets, except during the weekly maintenance window from Thursday 3:00-5:00 am ET.
Prediction markets are offered by CFM, a registered futures commission merchant with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and a Member of the National Futures Association. Trading prediction contracts involves substantial risk and may result in the loss of your entire investment.
