Coinbase Investors Score Major Victory in Regulatory Risk Lawsuit
Coinbase Global Inc. investors scored a significant victory in their lawsuit against the largest US crypto platform, alleging that it misrepresented hypothetical bankruptcy consequences and downplayed risks of regulatory scrutiny.
In a ruling on Tuesday, Judge Brian R. Martinotti denied Coinbase's bid to dismiss the proposed class complaint, which identified the certifier of certain corporate statements as CEO Brian Armstrong and Chief Financial Officer Alesia Haas.
The investors claimed that Armstrong certified corporate bankruptcy risk statements, while Armstrong certified regulatory risk ones, according to the unpublished opinion.
This decision is a significant setback for Coinbase, which had sought to dismiss the complaint as improper group pleadings. The ruling allows the lawsuit to move forward, potentially exposing Coinbase to further regulatory scrutiny and reputational damage.
