Coinbase Launches Regulated Derivatives in Canada with CFM Approval
Coinbase has launched regulated derivatives contracts in Canada through its Coinbase Financial Markets (CFM) entity, which is registered with the CFTC. This move aims to democratize access to these financial instruments for Canadian investors, who previously relied on offshore or unregulated platforms.
The product offering includes 23 perpetual and expiring futures contracts on assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, gold, silver, oil, and the COIN50 index. These contracts are designed with reduced sizes to require less initial capital and offer leverage of up to 10x in both long and short positions.
According to data cited by Coinbase, global crypto derivatives volume is 4.4 times that of spot trading, highlighting a significant structural demand for these products. However, Canadian traders had no regulated platform through which to access this liquidity, limiting their ability to hedge portfolios or take market positions with institutional backing.
