Coinbase Launches Regulated US500 Equity Index Perpetual Futures with Up to 20x Leverage
Coinbase Derivatives is about to introduce its latest product, US500 Equity Index Perpetual Futures, which will be available on August 17, 2026. This contract tracks the S&P 500 and offers up to 20x leverage, meaning a trader can take on $20,000 worth of index exposure with just $1,000 in margin.
The significance of this product lies in its structure. Unlike traditional futures, which expire on a fixed date, these contracts have no expiration date. Traders can hold them indefinitely, and funding rates act as the mechanism that keeps the contract price anchored to the underlying index.
This is a major milestone for Coinbase Derivatives, as it marks one of the first times perpetual futures have been available on a fully regulated US platform. However, this move comes amid an active legal battle between CME Group and the CFTC over the regulatory classification of perpetual futures. CME has filed a suit against the CFTC, arguing that perpetual futures are legally swaps, not futures.
