Coinbase Names Rob Witoff as New CTO Amidst AI-Focused Overhaul

Coinbase has appointed Rob Witoff as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO), effective July 28. Witoff, an early engineer at Coinbase, returns to the role after a stint as head of platform and executive team member since December 2024.

This appointment comes amidst a broader shift in how Coinbase develops software and organizes teams. In May, the company cut around 14% of its workforce, or approximately 700 roles, while flattening management and building smaller teams around AI tools.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong credits Witoff with helping turn the company into 'one of the most AI-enabled companies in the world.'
