Coinbase Premium Index Hits Record Low as US Risk Appetite Fades

The Coinbase Bitcoin Premium Index has reached historic levels of negativity, indicating a sharp decline in risk appetite among US investors. The current streak, which began on April 29, 2025, has surpassed the previous record set during the Terra-LUNA collapse and subsequent crypto credit crisis in 2022.

This negative premium comes amid a broader risk-off environment in traditional markets, with the Federal Reserve's hawkish stance on interest rates and lingering concerns about inflation and geopolitical tensions contributing to the downturn. Bitcoin, often classified as a high-beta risk asset, has not been immune to these market conditions, currently trading around $67,000, down from its March 2025 all-time high of $73,800.

The Coinbase Premium Index tracks the price difference between Bitcoin on Coinbase Pro and other major exchanges like Binance. A negative value indicates that US-based buyers are less aggressive than their global counterparts, suggesting persistent sell pressure among American institutional and retail participants.
