Coinbase Premium Index Stays Negative for 90 Days, Weakening U.S.-Linked Buying Pressure
A prolonged period of weaker U.S.-linked buying pressure is being signaled by the Coinbase Premium Index, which has remained below zero for about 90 consecutive days.
The index measures the difference between Bitcoin's price on Coinbase and its price on another major global venue, commonly Binance. When it is positive, Bitcoin is trading at a premium on Coinbase, indicating stronger buying pressure from participants using the U.S.-based exchange. However, with the current negative trend, Bitcoin is relatively cheaper on Coinbase.
The significance of the indicator comes from what Coinbase represents in the broader Bitcoin market: an important infrastructure provider for U.S. cryptocurrency trading and institutional custody. A prolonged negative reading can be interpreted as evidence that U.S.-linked buyers are not providing the same level of aggressive demand seen elsewhere.
However, a negative Coinbase Premium Index does not automatically mean that institutions are selling Bitcoin. The indicator measures a price difference between exchanges, not the individual buyers and sellers behind every transaction. Institutional flows can occur through mechanisms that are not fully captured by a simple exchange-to-exchange price comparison.
