Coinbase Prepares US Stock Perpetuals Amid Regulatory Uncertainty
Coinbase is working to bring stock perpetual contracts to the United States, as evidenced by two SEC filings on September 1. The company confirmed this move in a Twitter post on September 3, stating that it was collaborating closely with US financial regulators.
The filings cover Coinbase's regulated derivatives exchange and brokerage businesses, but do not indicate approval for trading purposes. The registrations will be solely limited to security futures, with the former enabling a regulated exchange by the CFTC to register with the SEC and the latter allowing an eligible registrant of the CFTC to register as a broker-dealer in connection with security futures.
Coinbase already offers stock perpetual futures for international users outside of the US, but this new move would bring these products to American customers. The company has been expanding its derivatives business in 2026, including acquiring Deribit and offering crypto perpetual futures within its regulated activities.
