Coinbase Pushes for Equity Perpetual Derivatives in US Market
Coinbase has submitted a comment letter to US regulators, pushing for the approval of equity perpetual derivatives for retail investors. The company wants American customers to be able to trade synthetic contracts tied to stocks, with leverage and no expiration dates, just like international users can today.
The current regulatory landscape is unclear on how to handle these products, which sit between the jurisdictions of the CFTC and SEC. Coinbase believes that classifying them as 'security futures' would provide a clear path forward.
This move fits into Coinbase's 'Everything Exchange' strategy, which aims to combine stocks, ETFs, crypto, and derivatives on a single platform where users can trade anything, anytime. The company has already expanded its services in the US, offering zero-commission spot trading of stocks and ETFs with extended trading hours.
