Coinbase Pushes for Regulatory Clarity in Canada

Coinbase is looking to expand its services in Canada beyond just a crypto trading platform. The exchange wants to offer a broader suite of financial products built on blockchain infrastructure, according to Eric Richmond, Coinbase's newly-appointed Canadian CEO.

Richmond said that the company aims to be 'the everything exchange' where customers can access all their financial services in one place. This vision depends largely on Canada's regulatory framework, which Richmond believes needs to evolve beyond temporary exemptions.

The country has made progress in crypto regulation, but much of it relies on regulatory staff notices and company-specific exemption orders rather than legislation specifically designed for digital assets. Richmond thinks a new bespoke legislative framework is needed to accommodate more sophisticated products.
