Coinbase Pushes to Bring Leveraged Stock Bets to US Markets
Coinbase Global has taken its first regulatory step towards allowing US investors to make leveraged bets on stocks without owning them.
The company filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) this week to offer single-stock perpetual futures, which would allow traders to speculate on stock prices 24/7 without having to own the underlying shares.
Coinbase hopes to bring the product to the US market this year after working with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for approvals. The company has been expanding beyond traditional spot crypto trading into new areas, aiming to make its business less vulnerable to market downturns.
The move is part of a broader effort by the crypto industry to bring the popular perpetual contracts onshore. Perpetual contracts are currently available offshore and have contributed significantly to the recent speculative trading boom.
