Coinbase Pushes Tokenized Stocks as Senate Prepares for CLARITY Act Vote
Coinbase is pushing for tokenized stocks as the Senate prepares to vote on the CLARITY Act, which aims to set global standards for the industry.
The bill needs 60 votes to pass and currently has the support of Republicans with 53 seats. The House already passed the bill by a vote of 294-134 in May 2026.
Coinbase Vice Chair Ryan VanGrack stated that tokenization is not a future concept, but rather an existing reality that's reshaping how capital markets work today. He emphasized the importance of setting clear rules to keep innovation within the country and prevent the US from ceding the future to other nations.
The National Sheriffs Association dropped its opposition to the bill on September 4, removing one obstacle to passage. However, several Democrats would still need to support the measure for it to pass.
Coinbase has already launched tokenized versions of shares from companies like Nvidia, Google, and MicroStrategy, which are redeemable for real stock and eligible for dividends. The company's Deribit unit also began offering 24/7 stock and commodity perpetual contracts on the same day as VanGrack's interview.
