Coinbase Reports Third Straight Quarterly Loss on Crypto Trading Slowdown
Crypto exchange Coinbase reported its third consecutive quarterly loss due to lower trading volumes. The prolonged downturn in cryptocurrency markets has led to uncertainty and a decline in risk-taking, causing investors to shun assets like crypto.
The company's transaction revenue dropped by 21% to $599 million during the second quarter, from $764 million a year earlier. This decrease is attributed to the ongoing 'crypto winter' that has persisted since October, when markets reached record highs.
Coinbase's subscription and services unit saw a 12.2% decline in revenue to $555.1 million. Total revenue fell by 18.5% to $1.22 billion during the quarter ended June 30.
Third Bridge analyst Jacob Zuller pointed out that Coinbase is lagging behind in tokenized equities and perpetual futures, which could help offset spot crypto trading volumes. Meanwhile, Robinhood Markets reported a 38% slump in second-quarter crypto transaction revenue, indicating softer trading volumes across the market.
