Coinbase Reverts Base App Name Change Amid Confusion Over Multichain Support
Coinbase has rebranded its Base App back to Coinbase Wallet after just over a year, in an effort to clear up confusion around the Base name. The rebranding move comes as the company looks to position the self-custody wallet as a multichain trading platform.
The change was prompted by user confusion over whether the Base App supported blockchains beyond Coinbase's Base network. Head of Coinbase's consumer app team Jordan 'Cobie' Fish decided it was time to rebrand, stating that the company needed to introduce a new logo to emphasize its multichain functionality.
The Base App was originally renamed from Coinbase Wallet in 2025 as part of Coinbase's efforts to turn the wallet into an 'everything app'. The rebranded product combined crypto trading with social features, content, and on-chain applications. However, this created confusion among users, who were unsure whether the Base App was solely a gateway to the Base network or a broader crypto wallet.
The newly christened Coinbase Wallet supports multiple networks, including Ethereum, Bitcoin, Solana, and several EVM-compatible networks such as Arbitrum, Avalanche, Optimism, Polygon, BNB Chain, and Base. The wallet's growth has been significant, with its total value locked (TVL) surging to $5.7 billion in August, while it processed over 277.5 million transactions during the same month.
