Coinbase Revives Coinbase Wallet Name After Social Experiment Fails
Coinbase has announced that it is restoring the Coinbase Wallet name to its self-custodial app, which was previously relaunched as Base App in July 2025. The change marks a shift away from a social-first 'everything app' and back towards fast, permissionless trading across many blockchains.
The experiment, dubbed 'A New Day One', aimed to blend social feeds, messaging, mini-apps, payments, creator tools, and trading into a single onchain home built around Coinbase's Ethereum layer-2 network. However, the company's CEO Brian Armstrong later said that the social push 'didn't quite work', and Base creator Jesse Pollak acknowledged that the social-first feed failed to hold attention.
The restored Coinbase Wallet name is meant to signal a broader role as the company's self-custodial front door to what product lead Ryan Kass calls an 'everything exchange'. The wallet now emphasizes speed and range, with onboarding designed to take seconds. Users keep full control of their keys, and existing balances are unaffected by the name change.
