Coinbase Scammers Steal Millions as Impersonation Schemes Skyrocket
Scammers have been impersonating Coinbase's customer support team to steal cryptocurrencies from unsuspecting holders. According to Chainalysis, the volume of reports related to this type of scam grew by 1,400% in a year.
The scammers typically call the victim and claim that there has been a suspicious login attempt or transaction blocked due to anti-money laundering measures. They then guide the victim through a series of actions, including transferring funds to a 'security vault' or 'cold storage wallet,' which is actually an address controlled by the scammers.
The US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York has filed charges against a group that allegedly used this method to steal approximately $16 million from cryptocurrency holders. The case is pending, but it highlights the growing threat posed by these types of scams.
