Coinbase Shares Outpace Bitcoin Amid Crypto Rally
The recent surge in Bitcoin prices has once again propelled Coinbase shares forward, highlighting the complex relationship between COIN stock and the world's largest cryptocurrency. Unlike MSTR, which holds large amounts of BTC on its balance sheet, Coinbase generates revenue primarily from trading activity and transaction fees.
As a result, when Bitcoin prices rise and investor activity increases, Coinbase can benefit from higher trading volumes. However, data from PortfoliosLab shows that the long-term correlation between COIN stock and BTC is approximately 0.61, indicating a moderate relationship but not a perfect one.
The bigger difference lies in volatility, with COIN stock experiencing significantly larger price swings than BTC. Long-term volatility for COIN has been estimated at roughly 20%, compared to about 8.5% for BTC. This amplified behavior was visible during the latest crypto market rally, where Coinbase shares jumped around 9.5% in one session and gained another 8% the following day as Bitcoin broke above $70,000.
Bitcoin has since extended its rally toward $80,000, with Coinbase shares trading between $174.73 and $189.27 on Tuesday, representing an intraday swing of more than 8%. COIN has gained approximately 16% this month as rising cryptocurrency prices boosted sentiment toward crypto-related stocks.
