Coinbase Shares Soar on Crypto-Backed Mortgages and Rising BTC Prices
Coinbase shares have surged almost 5% after the company revealed its partnership with Better Mortgage to issue conforming products backed by digital assets. This marks the next step in Coinbase's plans to integrate crypto into the core plumbing of the US housing finance system, as announced back in March.
Under this new program, instead of using cash for a down payment, borrowers can pledge their digital asset holdings as collateral. Better will originate these crypto-backed mortgages, and they'll benefit from Fannie Mae's backing.
The move is also being driven by the recent uptick in Bitcoin prices, which have pushed above $80,000. As Coinbase is considered a high-beta stock, any significant price movements in crypto tend to cause a corresponding swing in its share price.
While Coinbase has reached a new trading high of over $190 per share, it still lags behind its 52-week peak of over $402.
