Coinbase Shifts Regulatory Strategy, Seeks Clear Federal Rules for Digital Assets
Ryan VanGrack, Coinbase's newly appointed Vice Chair and head of corporate affairs, has shifted the company's regulatory posture from courtroom battles to growth and innovation.
VanGrack emphasizes that clear federal rules would enable proper oversight, investor protection, and US leadership in digital assets. He frames the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act as having 'tremendous momentum' with bipartisan Senate support and being 'on the one-yard line.'
The CLARITY Act aims to establish a federal regulatory framework that draws clear jurisdictional lines between the SEC and CFTC when it comes to digital assets. VanGrack previously held roles at Citadel Securities and served as an SEC official, giving him deep familiarity with both the regulatory apparatus and the institutional finance world that Coinbase increasingly wants to court.
Coinbase is expanding into equities trading, futures, prediction markets, and AI tools, positioning itself less as a crypto exchange and more as a full-spectrum financial services provider. The fact that lawmakers have moved past the question of whether crypto should exist and started wrestling with how it should be regulated suggests a new era for the industry.
