Coinbase Soars 11% on SEC Pivot and US Treasury Buybacks
Coinbase stock surged by around 11 percent on August 19, making it one of the biggest gainers in the market. The rally was driven by three key factors: doubled US Treasury buybacks, the SEC's new token rulemaking proposal, and a crypto summit at the White House where Coinbase representatives were present.
The increased liquidity from the buybacks means more trading for Coinbase, which earns on every transaction. Rising prices and volumes also drive core revenue directly, with over $36.5 billion in bitcoin traded within 24 hours on August 19 alone.
The SEC's proposal to exempt token-based capital raises of up to $75 million a year from full securities treatment is a significant development for Coinbase. This would allow more projects to list on the platform, generating new revenue streams.
COIN remains a high-risk investment and its price can swing sharply in either direction, both upwards and downwards. However, the SEC's pivot towards clearer token rules has reduced regulatory risk premiums on the stock, contributing to the recent rally.
