Coinbase Sounds Alarm on Bitcoin Quantum Security
Coinbase has sounded an alarm on Bitcoin quantum security, urging the industry to prepare for potential threats from future advances in quantum computing. CEO Brian Armstrong stated that while quantum computers do not pose an immediate threat to Bitcoin, it is essential to start preparing now.
The announcement coincided with the launch of the Bitcoin Security Consortium, which includes prominent companies such as BlackRock and Fidelity Digital Assets. The consortium has committed $15 million over three years for developers, researchers, and organizations working on Bitcoin security.
Coinbase has already started developing post-quantum cryptography systems and has created an Independent Advisory Board on Quantum Computing and Blockchain to evaluate realistic risks and recommend practical actions. The board concluded that current blockchain cryptography must be replaced and that migration, rather than cryptographic design, presents the largest challenge.
