Coinbase Stock Jumps 10% on SEC Filing for US Perpetual Futures
Coinbase Global Inc (NASDAQ: COIN) stock saw a significant surge on Thursday, closing up more than 10% to $192.70. The jump came after Coinbase filed paperwork with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to offer stock perpetual futures to American traders.
This is a major step for the crypto exchange, which already offers these products outside the United States. The move would open a large new revenue stream for Coinbase and put it in more direct competition with traditional brokers.
The filing wasn't the only reason for the rally. A strong rally by Bitcoin on the day, combined with the company's 14th straight quarter of positive Adjusted EBITDA, record 10.3% share of global crypto trading volume, and Fed Governor Christopher Waller signaling support for holding interest rates steady, all contributed to the increase in COIN stock.
CEO Brian Armstrong expressed confidence that the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act can pass the Senate in September, which would set clearer federal rules for crypto and help attract institutional investors. However, regulation remains a key factor in determining the future of Coinbase's products and stock price.
