Coinbase Stock Plunges After Missing Wall Street Expectations
Coinbase stock took another hit after missing Wall Street expectations in its latest earnings report. The cryptocurrency exchange's total revenue came in at $1.2 billion, short of the estimated $1.3 billion and a significant drop from last year's $1.5 billion. Transaction revenue, Coinbase's largest contributor to earnings, fell by 21% year-over-year to under $600 million.
Despite efforts to diversify its business with new revenue streams, subscription revenue also declined for the third consecutive quarter, accounting for nearly half of the exchange's total net revenue. Stablecoins remained a significant driver of Coinbase's income, with USDC generating $292 million in the second quarter, followed by staking income and interest and finance fee income.
Coinbase CFO Alesia Haas attributed the disappointing earnings to a weaker crypto market during the second quarter, noting that total cryptocurrency spot trading volumes across the market declined by more than 20% during the period. As a result, Coinbase shares fell around 7% in after-hours trading following the release of the earnings report.
