Coinbase Stock Plunges as Investment Banks Cut Price Targets Amid Regulatory Uncertainty

Shares of Coinbase (COIN) dropped by over 5% in pre-market trade on Friday after several major investment banks cut their price targets for the company's stock following its second-quarter earnings report.

The earnings miss was attributed to lower crypto trading volumes and softer third-quarter guidance, with analysts at BTIG, Clear Street, and Goldman Sachs reducing their forecasts. However, despite the weak quarter, these firms noted that Coinbase continues to gain market share and diversify its business beyond spot trading.

CEO Brian Armstrong highlighted this strategy in the company's earnings release, stating that 'Coinbase is no longer a bet just on the price of Bitcoin.' Instead, he emphasized the firm's efforts to build an 'everything exchange' through recurring revenue streams from products like stablecoins and subscription services.

The slide in COIN stock comes amidst weakness in Bitcoin (BTC), which fell around 1% in the last 24 hours. The decline also follows a report that lawmakers are struggling to secure the necessary votes for passage of the CLARITY Act, a bill aiming to establish a clearer regulatory framework for digital assets in the U.S.
