Coinbase Stock Slumps on Crushing Q2 Earnings Miss
Coinbase stock plummeted 6.9% in after-hours trading following the crypto exchange's dismal second-quarter earnings report.
The company reported a loss of $1.36 per share, significantly worse than the estimated loss of $0.01 per share, and total revenue of $1.2 billion fell short of the expected $1.33-$1.35 billion, marking the third consecutive quarterly loss for Coinbase.
The decline in transaction revenue was primarily responsible for the revenue shortfall, with a 21% year-over-year drop to $599 million, partly due to Bitcoin's (BTC) 14% and Ethereum's (ETH) 25% price drops during the April-June period. This led to decreased trading volumes and volatility across spot markets.
The news was not entirely negative, however, as subscription and services revenue showed resilience, representing 48% of net revenue, up from 29% less than two years ago. Coinbase also narrowed its full-year adjusted expense guidance to $4.2-$4.45 billion and ended the quarter with $8.6 billion in cash and cash equivalents.
A U.S. district judge's dismissal of 99.97% of claims in a customer lawsuit alleging illegal sales of unregistered securities provided little relief for investors, who were further discouraged by industry peer Binance's 38% year-over-year decline in crypto trading revenue the previous day.
