Coinbase Stock Tumbles Amid Crypto Market Woes and Wide Q2 Loss
Coinbase's stock plummeted more than 10% in early trading on Friday after the company posted a wider-than-expected net loss of $359 million for the second quarter. This marks Coinbase's third consecutive quarterly loss since the crypto market began to decline from its October highs.
The company's net revenue fell 17% year-over-year to $1.15 billion, while adjusted EBITDA dropped 59% to $208 million, missing analyst expectations by a third. Analysts had anticipated a net loss of just $0.44 per share.
Coinbase's CFO Alesia Haas attributed the decline in revenue to the current 'down market' in crypto, but pointed out that record paid membership in Coinbase One indicates customers remain engaged. The company's non-trading subscription and services revenue fell 12% year-over-year to $555 million, accounting for 48% of quarterly revenue.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong downplayed the impact of the Clarity Act, saying 'business as usual' would continue if it doesn't pass. However, he noted that passage could provide durability and allow for longer-term investments.
