Coinbase Taps Rob Witoff as New CTO Amid AI Transformation Push
Coinbase has appointed Rob Witoff as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in a move that underscores the company's commitment to accelerating its AI transformation.
The appointment comes after a major restructuring plan was implemented in May, which saw around 700 employees let go, representing approximately 14% of the exchange's global workforce. The goal behind this move was to flatten management layers and reorganize teams around artificial intelligence-assisted development.
Raised within the crypto ecosystem since his initial approach to the Bitcoin protocol in 2009, Witoff has been an integral part of Coinbase's growth. He first joined the company in 2014 as an infrastructure engineer before becoming director of infrastructure and security, chief architect, and even founding a security firm that was later acquired by Coinbase.
Witoff rejoined the organization in December 2024 as Head of Platform, with the aim of strengthening systems engineering and preparing the infrastructure for new scales of usage. His return marked an important step towards building an agile operating environment for software builders.
