Coinbase Unleashes Tokenized Stocks on Base Blockchain
Coinbase has launched tokenized US stocks on its proprietary Layer 2 blockchain, Base. The move allows for 24-hour trading of major tech stocks including Apple (AAPL), Nvidia (NVDA), Meta (META), and Alphabet (GOOGL). These tokens are backed 1:1 by actual shares held by Alpaca, a regulated broker and custodian.
The tokens are issued under the regulatory framework of the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) where Coinbase has established a global tokenization hub. Investors can hold these tokens directly in self-custody wallets and trade them on supported platforms including the decentralized exchange Aerodrome.
Coinbase has plans to add more tokenized listings within weeks, starting with the stocks unveiled in this launch. The company also intends to bring other real-world assets (RWAs) to the Base chain in the near future.
