Coinbase Unveils Agent Payments, Enabling Bots to Buy and Sell

Share

Coinbase Business, the exchange's payments platform, has launched a new feature that enables merchants to accept payments from AI bots. This milestone marks the unit's one-year anniversary since its launch in June 2025.

The new payment stack uses Coinbase Payments and the x402 open internet payments standard. According to Coinbase Business head Siddharth Coelho-Prabhu, this is a parallel channel that runs alongside existing human payments flow, requiring no additional configuration from merchants. AI bots can communicate in machine-readable language, complete transactions, and exit without human intervention.

In its first year, Coinbase Business signed up around 5,000 customers, processed roughly $1 billion in combined payments and trading volume, and expanded to about 12 employees. Coelho-Prabhu described this as his second major zero-to-one product at the company.
