Coinbase Unveils AI-Powered Payment System Using USDC
Coinbase is pushing deeper into the emerging AI economy by developing an agentic payments ecosystem that allows artificial intelligence agents to discover services, make payments, and use those services with limited human intervention.
The company's x402 protocol uses an HTTP payment request that can prompt an agent to make an on-chain payment before accessing a paid resource, creating a pay-per-use model particularly useful for APIs, data services, computing resources, and other digital products.
Coinbase has emphasized the importance of stablecoins like USDC in providing a predictable unit of value for automated transactions. Unlike cryptocurrencies that can experience significant price fluctuations, USDC is designed to maintain a value of approximately one U.S. dollar.
The company's initiative represents a broader convergence between cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence. AI agents now offer a potential use case for programmable payments that operate without traditional financial intermediaries.
