Coinbase Unveils Crypto-Backed Mortgages with Better Home & Finance
Crypto-backed mortgages have arrived in the US market thanks to a partnership between Coinbase and Better Home & Finance Holding Company. As of mid-August 2026, eligible Coinbase One members can use their crypto as collateral for a down payment without actually selling it.
The product pairs a standard Fannie Mae-conforming mortgage with a secondary loan backed by Bitcoin or USDC held in Coinbase custody. The dual-loan structure allows borrowers to secure the second loan separately from the traditional conforming mortgage, covering the down payment without converting their digital assets to cash.
This approach helps buyers preserve their position and avoid capital gains taxes triggered by selling crypto to fund a down payment. Additionally, there are no margin calls triggered by crypto price drops; collateral liquidation only occurs if a borrower misses mortgage payments for 60 days.
The rates on these loans run about 0.5% to 1.5% above standard conforming mortgage rates, depending on the borrower's profile. Coinbase One members who qualify also receive up to $10,000 in lender credits toward closing costs, a 1% credit on the mortgage amount capped at $10K.
