Coinbase has expanded its services to include USDC payments for autonomous AI agents. The exchange launched this feature on July 23, 2026, as a response to rising automated web activity. According to Coinbase, payment systems require human intervention, which can hinder their functionality for autonomous software.

The company's x402 protocol allows businesses to receive and manage USDC payments from AI agents through its business platform. This includes receiving, monitoring, reconciling, and cashing out these funds via a single account. The exchange also introduced agent trading commands and a developer kit for integrating x402 payments into online services.

The x402 protocol implements the HTTP 402 Payment Required response code for payments, enabling AI agents to confirm payment with stablecoin and resend requests with payment confirmation. Coinbase's Developer Platform released the CDP x402 software development kit, which includes chosen infrastructure and extensions to simplify payment middleware configuration.
