Coinbase Wallet Returns, Multichain Trading Now Front and Center
Coinbase is reverting its self-custodial app back to 'Coinbase Wallet' after a 14-month experiment as Base App. The relaunch, which occurred in July 2025, aimed to create an 'everything app' with social networking, messaging, payments, and trading features.
However, the social features did not deliver the expected adoption, with Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong acknowledging in March that they 'didn't quite work.'
The rebrand back to Coinbase Wallet marks a shift in focus towards multichain trading across 11 networks, including Robinhood Chain and Solana. The wallet will now serve as a 'test kitchen' for assets and experiences not yet available on the centralized exchange.
Ryan Kass, head of product for Coinbase Wallet, stated that the rebrand signals the app's ability to reach beyond any single network. He emphasized the importance of being able to access any asset, regardless of the chain or brand.
