Coinbase's $100M US500 Futures Contract Hits Early Trading Milestone
Coinbase's US500 futures contract reached a significant milestone, exceeding $100 million in matched turnover just eight days after its launch on August 17. The data, tracked by Armstrong and displayed on Coinbase's product page, shows that the contract experienced a surge in trading activity before settling down to more stable levels.
The US500 futures contract is a unique offering that combines elements of traditional equity-index futures with crypto-native features such as an hourly funding rate calculation. This mechanism allows for the creation of a perpetual-style contract that offers traders cash-settled exposure to the MarketVector Top 500 US Profitable Companies Continuous Index (MVPUSC), rather than physical delivery of shares.
While the initial volume milestone is an important indicator of the contract's success, Coinbase's product team notes that sustained trading activity and persistent open interest are more telling signs of the contract's viability. A longer funding history will also provide valuable insights into the market's positioning and balance.
