Coinbase's $104M US500 Futures Milestone Marks Early Test for Crypto-Native Trading Mechanism
Coinbase's US500 futures contract, launched on August 17th, has reached an early milestone of $104 million in trading volume. The contract, a five-year cash-settled future with an hourly funding mechanism inspired by crypto perpetuals, uses the MarketVector Top 500 US Profitable Companies Continuous Index as its benchmark.
The funding rate for the contract was negative 0.0001% at one point, indicating that shorts were paying longs. However, a single reading of the funding rate does not provide conclusive evidence of a lasting directional imbalance in the market.
To gauge the success of the US500 futures contract, it is essential to monitor its volume and open interest over an extended period. Repeat volume through ordinary sessions would show that trading survived the launch window, while stable or rising open interest across multiple days would indicate that traders continued to hold exposure.
