Coinbase's $104M US500 Futures Milestone Tests Crypto Trading in Regulated Markets
Coinbase's US500 futures contract reached a $104 million trading milestone just a week after its launch, marking an early test of whether a crypto-native trading mechanism can thrive in regulated US equity markets.
The contract, which uses a 'perp style' design with hourly funding calculations, has seen significant trading activity despite initial lower readings. The data shows that the contract's turnover surged, but open interest remains relatively low at $3.01 million, indicating that traders are still testing the waters.
To meet US market rules, the contract is a five-year, cash-settled future with a fixed expiry date of December 2030 and operates under exchange position limits, price limits, and market-wide circuit breakers. The reference index used for settlement is the MarketVector Top 500 US Profitable Companies Continuous Index (MVPUSC), which differs from the S&P 500.
The $104 million milestone represents a significant achievement for Coinbase's derivatives product, but it remains to be seen whether sustained volume and persistent open interest will follow. The contract's success will depend on its ability to attract and retain traders, as well as provide reliable liquidity throughout the trading session.
