Coinbase's Base App Shifts Focus to Trading Platform
Coinbase's Base app is shifting its focus from being centered around the Coinbase-led layer-2 blockchain, Base (BASE), to becoming a comprehensive trading platform. According to an interview with Gareth Jenkinson on The Block podcast 'The Starting Block', Base creator Jesse Pollak stated that as the app evolves, its Base-centered approach will naturally fade.
Pollak noted that under new leadership from Jordan 'Kobi' Fish, who took over last month, the app will broaden its scope to enable trading of various network assets and functions from anywhere. Fish joined Coinbase after the company acquired his cryptocurrency fundraising platform Echo for around $375 million in cash and stock combined.
Pollak emphasized that the Base app had previously focused on growing the Base ecosystem with products built directly on the network, but under Fish's leadership, it will cover other blockchain assets and functions. Pollak stated that Fish will concentrate solely on building the best trading product, and that Base must compete by having everything needed to build the app users want, including the best assets, deepest liquidity, and best execution.
