Coinbase's Diverse UK Offering: Key Differences Between Crypto, Advanced Trading, and Stocks
Coinbase's UK offering is not a one-size-fits-all trading service. It has three distinct services: standard crypto purchases and sales, an Advanced trading interface with TradingView charts and market orders, and US-listed share trading through CB Payments Ltd.
The key distinction to note before placing a trade is that each service has different charges and order tools. Standard crypto transactions include fees and spreads in the quoted price, which can vary depending on payment method, order size, market conditions, jurisdiction, and asset involved. The spread is the difference built into the quoted price, affecting the effective price a buyer pays or a seller receives.
Coinbase Advanced uses a maker/taker fee model, with fees displayed before submission, based on 30-day trading volume and whether the order adds liquidity as a maker or removes it as a taker. The stock service offered through CB Payments Ltd advertises zero commission but states that foreign-exchange conversion and other fees may still apply.
Cryptoasset investments generally lack UK consumer protections and Financial Services Compensation Scheme coverage, according to the FCA's warning. While Coinbase's stock service is subject to relevant regulations, users should distinguish between the asset and service involved before drawing conclusions about protection.
