Coincheck Restricts Transfers to New Addresses Amid Phishing Scam Concerns
Coincheck, a Japanese cryptocurrency exchange, has announced that it will impose a time-limited restriction on transfers to newly registered destination addresses starting September 15. This move is in response to the growing damage from phishing scams and unauthorized access leading to fraudulent transfers.
The restriction applies to all destination addresses newly registered on or after September 15, with transfers to those addresses restricted for an undisclosed period following registration. Transfers to already-registered addresses remain unaffected and can be used as before.
Coincheck's decision is based on a joint request issued in August by Japan's Financial Services Agency and the National Police Agency to strengthen fraud prevention measures. The request includes setting up a pre-registration system for crypto asset withdrawal destination addresses, restricting external withdrawals after fiat currency deposits or crypto asset purchases, and enhancing monitoring of transaction environments.
