Coinkite Hackers Steal $140M in Bitcoin from 7,300 Accounts
Toronto-based entrepreneur Jonathan Goodman, author of Unhinged Habits, recently lost $1.6 million in a major Bitcoin hack that stole roughly $140 million worth of cryptocurrency across 7,300 accounts.
The thieves targeted offline-password devices made by the Canadian company Coinkite, which Goodman had purchased to store his Bitcoin securely.
'I thought there's no way this affects me,' Goodman said about initially ignoring a Facebook post warning of the hack. 'But when my account loaded, I saw the red lines, and I knew that everything was gone.' The entire loss occurred over eight minutes two days earlier.
