Coldcard Breach Exposes Weaknesses in Crypto Security Infrastructure
A significant security breach affected Bitcoin's market in early August. On July 31st, an exploit targeting a five-year-old key-generation vulnerability in Coldcard hardware wallets led to the theft of approximately $38 million worth of BTC.
The breach impacted around 500 self-custodied wallets, with nearly 119,423 BTC moving over three days as users responded to the incident and transferred funds to new addresses. About 10% of these moved assets were sent to exchanges.
Glassnode data showed a sharp surge in the Revived Supply 1-year metric. However, despite this significant movement of long-dormant coins, Bitcoin's market depth remained shallow, and prices barely reacted, reflecting limited immediate buy or sell interest at prevailing levels.
