Coldcard Breach Reignites Debate Over Bitcoin ETF Merits

A recent security breach involving the Coldcard hardware wallet has rekindled debate over the merits of Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs). The incident saw an estimated $88.6 million drained from 4,585 addresses, with Galaxy Research tracing 1,367.05 BTC across these accounts.

Bloomberg Intelligence senior ETF analyst Eric Balchunas argued that the Coldcard security failure strengthens the case for U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs, particularly for investors seeking long-term price exposure without managing private keys.

Balchunas noted that institutional custody makes Bitcoin ETFs preferable for these investors, as they avoid seed management but surrender direct ownership and round-the-clock access to the Bitcoin network.
