Coldcard Breach Triggers Record Bitcoin Activity Amid Security Concerns
A recent security breach affecting certain Coldcard hardware wallets has prompted a surge in Bitcoin activity. In early August, daily active Bitcoin addresses climbed to 0.98 million, the highest level since December 2024.
The increase was driven primarily by security concerns rather than a fundamental shift in market sentiment, according to Glassnode. Holders moved their funds into newly generated wallets and alternative custody arrangements following the disclosure of a Coldcard firmware vulnerability.
The reported exploit has resulted in more than $130 million in potential losses, with over 1,596 BTC stolen from approximately 7,300 addresses across three major attack waves and 14 smaller incidents. The confirmed losses exceeded $100 million at prevailing prices, while unconfirmed losses could add another $30 million or more.
The incident has highlighted the importance of recovery seed security in self-custody wallets, with a firmware update unable to retroactively secure a generated seed under vulnerable conditions. As a result, many holders sought safer storage rather than attempting to sell their assets.
