Coldcard Compromise Exposes Crypto Storage Weakness

A recent Coldcard hardware wallet compromise has exposed a fundamental weakness in cryptocurrency storage, according to BlockTower Capital founder Ari Paul.

The incident allowed an attacker to steal roughly $70.2 million worth of BTC in just 41 minutes, highlighting the risks associated with self-custody and third-party custody solutions.

Paul argued that 'there is simply no way to secure crypto,' stating that even self-custody has its limitations, as demonstrated by the Coldcard compromise.

He noted that every custody solution relies on hardware and software that can have vulnerabilities, making it impossible to achieve complete security.

Erik Voorhees of ShapeShift countered Paul's views, suggesting that while there is no single risk-free storage system, hundreds of billions of dollars worth of crypto have been stored securely for years.
