Coldcard Compromise Exposes Cryptocurrency's Biggest Weakness
A recent firmware flaw in Coldcard hardware wallets has exposed a concerning reality about the security of cryptocurrency. According to Paul, an analyst who spoke out after the compromise, 'there is simply no way to secure crypto.' The vulnerability allowed an attacker to steal roughly $70.2 million worth of BTC in just 41 minutes.
The incident highlighted that even cold storage solutions are not foolproof. Paul argued that both self-custody and third-party custody have their weaknesses, with the former vulnerable to hardware and software flaws and the latter subject to hacking risks.
Erik Voorhees, founder of ShapeShift, defended self-custody, stating that while there is no single storage system that is perfectly risk-free, every method involves different tradeoffs rather than identical risks. He noted that hundreds of billions of dollars worth of crypto have been stored securely for years.
